Misogi

Misogi describes various practices of Japanese Shinto origins. Loosely translated, the term means “purification” or “cleansing”. The particular practice we are undertaking is bell misogi, or, as named by Tohei Sensei of Ki no Kenkyu Kai, “sokushin no gyo”, Mind Purification Exercise. Originally practiced at Ichiku Kai Zen Dojo in Nakano, Tokyo, the bell misogi typically followed the monthly week-long silent mediation retreat. However, bell misogi is anything but silent. Loud poly-rhythmic chants accompanied by the ringing of the bell forge focus, endurance, and breath.


Those daring to undertake this three day practice at Ichiku Kai had to turn in all their possessions for the white practice garb of the temple monks. Their clothes, wallets, shoes, etc., were not returned until the three day practice was over. Thus, ‘quitters’, dressed in white, shoeless and penniless, were easily identifiable in town, and the shame of being seen in such a state kept many students at the bell despite the fatigue and hardship.


Such training is rare today. Though vigorous, our Misogi practice is rarely more than a single hour long session per week, and is followed by a hearty potluck meal. Maruyama Sensei, direct student of O’Sensei and Tohei Sensei, and founder of Aikido Yuishinkai, has practiced and shared bell misogi for better than 40 years. Through him misogi comes to Denniston Sensei. Even our hour long misogi is a powerful tool for developing breath, core strength, and mental and physical endurance.


You do not have to practice Aikido to join bell Misogi; the practice is open to the public. The Bells we use were attained especially to share this practice.
